Skype 'Blocked' Out in China Service is illegal, would 'destroy market order'
Shenzhen Telecom, a local arm of China Telecom, has moved to block access to SkypeOut - a low cost way to make PC based calls to those who use traditional landlines or mobile phones. Chinese telecom providers have shown a growing concern over the potential impact of VoIP telephone services such as Skype on their businesses, this latest action by Shenzhen Telecom is an indication that they may take action to thwart it. The Financial Times has reported that an employee at a Shenzhen Telecom service centre said staff had been instructed to tell customers who complained about being unable to access SkypeOut that such internet telephone services were illegal in China under a 2004 regulation because they would “destroy market order”.
