Building your own computer will save you an unbelievable amount of money. I have built about 10 computers so far and I have saved over $200 on each one. The computer I currently have (which you can drool over in the "Who has the best comp/server" in the Best Players of USEast board ) would cost me $7,000 if I bought it from Dell. For me to make it, it cost about $2,000 . As you can see, making your own computer is very inexpensive, and is probably easier than you think.
"Whoa wait a minute, I don't know sh*t about technology, how the hell am I going to make my own computer?" is what you might be saying right now. Believe me, it is much easier than you think.
Search the web on how to assemble a computer. Since it requires ALOT of explaining and I just don't have the time to write all of it .
Here are some for starters:
www.learnthat.com/courses/computer/buildpc/assemble.shtml
www.mysuperpc.com/build.shtml
www.auldfart.co.uk/howto/page1.html
www.tomshardware.com/howto/20020904/
If you read through all of those, you will have a pretty good understanding of how a computer goes together. If you have ANY questions, please ask on this post. Your name can be anonymous so ask any question you have no matter how stupid it is.
After doing alot of research and taking the side off of your own computer and looking at the insides, you might be able to take yours apart and put it back together. WARNING! DO NOT TAKE APART YOUR COMPUTER UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!! ONLY ATTEMPT ANY OF THESE IF YOU HAVE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO DO IT.
Start by unhooking wires and putting them back, then try taking out a CD drive and putting it back in and hooking it up right. Make sure you are familiar with the cables that are hooked up to it so you know how to put it back together. Take little steps at a time so you don't screw anything up. I wouldn't recommend taking out the hard drive until you have successfully taken out a CD drive first. Your computer will run without a CD/Floppy drive, but it will not run without a hard drive!
Depending on your current knowledge of computers, you might know how to pick out computer parts or you might not. I guess the easiest way for you if you don't know how is to tell me what you want your computer to be able to do, like play a certain game, use for sound/video editing etc... Then I will pick out the right parts for you so you know that everthing you order will fit together right. It would be extremely hard for me to explain every part that has to match other parts so I just won't go there.
Here are some web sites that sell computer parts for really cheap:
www.newegg.com/ <-- My main source
www.computergate.com/
www.tigerdirect.com/
Now this web site may not be the cheapest, but it is about the only place you can get the best parts for pimping out your computer:
www.xoxide.com/
That site has the sweetest looking computer stuff I have ever seen and I bought my case from them.
With those guides and computer shopping web sites, you should be able to build yourself your own computer. Remember, this post is here if you have any questions to ask. I can pick out parts for you if you are unsure on what to get, but if you feel like you know enough, GO FOR IT!! Building a computer is a very enjoyable and rewarding process and I highly recommend it to anyone who is willing to take the time to research everything and go through the steps on how to put it together. It is also a very profitable hobby. You can start doing what I am doing right now, which is making computers for people. Once you get your first one built, it will come easy to make others.
If you ever get into a jam where something doesn't work or you need help on something, go ahead and ask. I can safely say that I know just about everything there is to know about computers, and if there is something I don't know, I have MANY resources in which I can find the answer. If you do choose to build your own, good luck and have fun with it .
