PS3: $399 With next-gen games at $60
According to analysts at Merrill Lynch, the Playstation 3 is expected to hit the street with a price-tag of around $399, though each unit is expected to cost Sony $494 to make. The Cell processor, NVIDIA GPU and Blu-Ray drive each cost about $100 to include. It appears most next-gen console titles are going to show up at the $60 price point.
or so they say.. No new word on xbox =\

I'll admit $399 at Launch is pretty up there, but I'm not surprised to see they're losing $. That was the same case for Xbox & PS2 in 2001.

dude 399 isnt that much. I paid 450 for my xbox when it first came out. I'll do the same for the xbox 360 when it comes out. Considering i paid nearly 399 for my psp 399 for ps3 doesnt seem like that much money.

Sorry to raise the dead with this ancient topic folks, but something caught my that I thought you guys would be interested in. (couple things actually, i'll share 'em later)
Sony is apparently learning from their past mistakes regarding launch demand. This generation they will be delegating some OEM partners, such as Foxxconn & Asustek, to develop additional PlayStation 3 units once Sony's own manufacturing plans have acounted for projected demand.
In other words, sony is sort of sharing the wealth and letting other companies help out in the event that the PlayStation 3 over-sells. I guess this means no more $5000 playstation 3s on Ebay?

NewsFlash! (omfg) Its more or less confirmed that the playstation 3 will be delayed until August 2006, just as popular speculation dictated. All this, despite Sony's insistance that the playstation 3 would be ready for a cold launch in spring of 2006.
Its still possible that Sony will circulate an extremely limited quantity of Playstation 3 consoles in April to generate hype and other bullshit like they usually do, but an August release seems to make more sense from an economical stand-point, as not only will several of its key components drop in manufacturing price, but a hard launch at that time would keep the system fresh on everyone's mind in time for Christmas.

I think they'll do go because of all the outraged 360 owners that had a callback. I know a plenty of people who's HD's have failed or PSU's have overheated. :/ Shows what you get for pushing your launch date to make it for christmas.

You're right. It was a l'il rushed I think. PS2 has outlived its estimated life cycle, but I know the Xbox 1 and even cube still have some untapped horse power.
For instance, Valve just released HalfLife 2 for Xbox, yet theres absolutely no buzz about it cuz they rushed the 360 to market. Its ironic because the PS2, a console that is suppose to compete with the Xbox, recieved Half-Life 1 with some minor graphical upgrades just last year. these were the same optimizations that were available for the dreamcast version of half-life 1 :/
So yea. Xbox = current + halfway nextgen console in my humble but should-be-globally-recognized-as-somewhat-professional opinion.
