wow.. so people dont have to go to a different site: Said By Neo:
Since I first started playing ZC, I have been wondering how many workers on each mineral patch is the optimum number. There are 20 stacked minerals at each main and 10 stacked minerals on each side.
My Method After I unlocked the original ZC v2, I kept everything the same except for adding these UMS triggers:
I start mining the minerals with a predetermined amount of workers. I wait about a minute to let them even themselves out. When a worker is brought to a certain location, the worker is killed, the resources are set to 0, and a 60 second countdown timer is started. When the countdown timer finishes, all of the workers are killed, essentially giving me the MPM (Minerals Per Minute) for that mineral stack with that amount of workers.
Results I was getting consistant results for the early trials, with less than 20 probes on the main minerals. Then when I started getting to 20-30, the results were very inconsistant. I didn't know what was going wrong. I timed it with a stopwatch instead of the countdown timer, but that wasn't the problem. I let them mine for over 2 minutes to see if they would even out even more, but they didn't.
After a long time of thinking, I tried putting probes on just 1 side of the stack and then trying it with an equal amount of probes on both sides of the stack. That was it! I couldn't believe that it would matter, but it does. If you put workers equally on both sides of the mineral stack, you will get 100-200 more minerals per minute than if they were just on 1 side. 100-200 MPM is a HUGE difference. That can mean 500-1000 more minerals before MM!
As for the best amount of workers to have, the results were not a surprise for me:
Main Mineral Stack - 20-22 Workers. Showed great improvement up to 20, then leveled off around 21-22. Anything over 22 showed very little or no improvement.
Side Mineral Stacks - 22-26 Workers. Although, minor improvements were seen with up to 30 workers on the side.
(NOTE: I have the actual numbers at home, but I'm at work right now. I can post the MPM for each worker count if someone wants me to.)
Conclusion The worker count was not a surprise to me, but the fact that there was a very noticeable difference when you put workers on both sides of the stack instead of just one side shocked me.
I'll probably do this study again sometime with gas too. Since I do 3 trials with each worker addition and each trial takes over a minute, it's not very fun.
Post any questions or comments that you have.

How did you "unlock" zc v2? I'm glad to see I've been doing something right all this time. Cuz my mining routine consists of equally distributing workers to both sides of my main. I used to do that for the sake of confirming that I had 20 workers, since you can't count above 12 per side. By the way, I should have posted this a long time ago, but I did some research of my own a while back regarding the optimum amount of workers to assign to the main mineral stack. What I did was put 20 workers on the main, select a random worker, and measure the delay between the swapping of the mining icons from "gather" to "return" on the bottom right button panel. I did this for over 20 harevest/return cycles on low game speed and determined that they were equal the entire time. I then added two workers, (one to each side incidentally) and noticed that usually around the 18th - 22nd harvest/return cycle it takes roughly 25% longer. This implies that a worker is idly waiting for a mineral field to free up, so I concluded that 20 workers was the optimum, as everyone suggests. I never conducted any tests for the sides. *Edit* OMFG: If the original v2 does in fact have only 10 minerals per side, it would explain why my recreation of zc v2 (with the obs in UMS mode) maxed 30-40 seconds faster than usual, & why ppl reported having so much more $. >< When I rebuilt it I applied 20 mineral fields to each side! Mystery solved, everybody! ZC v2.1 beta is on its way .

I don't know very many clan channels, so it doesn't seem all that prestigious to me. Besides, we're still a zc clan, so how much attention do we need?

lol. after i read that LONG Article i thought i was gonna get some huge tip then all it says it in conclusion Put probes equally on each side and its like. ARE U fuckIN SERIOUS. Thats preschool shit.

What part of it is common sense? Logic dictates that time would be better spent constructing buildings than manually distributing workers on a mineral field. There is no practical reason why workers should have to be equally disctributed on both sides of a mineral field since the fields are perfectly overlapped. It just happens to be more effective that way. I dare say the need to split up the workers is the result of a glitch.

mining is common sense... if theres 20 on each 1.. and 1 of them is fastest... u gonna get 20 ther or 40? sides have a bit of a run so u get a lil bit more ther but u cudnt b serious alpha.. Most Stupidity In The US Is Self Imposed -Civics Book

LOl STeve man Its seriously COmmen sense to realize that if u distribute the miners equally on each side u'll get better results then if u STack them all on 1 side. Like i said before thats one of the first things i ever learned in Sc.

LMAO. KJ & DD, you both totally missed the point of neo's post.........
He is saying that if you have 20 stacked minerals IN THE MIDDLE, then you should place 10 on both sides of THAT PARTICULAR STACK. He doesn't mean the side mineral piles.

Thats exacly what i said steve. I was talking about the middle mineral. U fuckin crack head. I been puttin 10 minerals on each side of the middle mineral bay For years. Its like i said complete common sense my friend. 20 miners divided equally on each side of the mineral bay will work alot better then 20 stacked all on 1 side of the mineral bay. U misunderstood my post steve. READ IT AGAIN

yea but it shouldnt matter, its 20 stacked. Thats like saying for FPM, theres 50 stacked, so to get full use of it u have to put 25 on each side, this is bs, because its stacked, so whereever you put the miners it should make use of all the mineral stacks. it shouldnt matter how you place your miners. its STACKED!.
*Thumbs Down Blizzard* *thumbs down Map creator(s)*
